California considers $50 diaper vouchers to help struggling families.

Renowned as a forerunner for social, cultural, and legislative changes that impact the entire country, California may soon extend its influence to include diapers.

The California Assembly is expected to vote, this week, on two “diaper” bills, AB 492 and AB 717. The passage of the bills would effectively improve the well-being of infants and toddlers statewide, and intensify national momentum for the rapidly growing diaper bank movement that is addressing diaper need in communities throughout the U.S.

Upon passage, AB 492 would provide a monthly $50 diaper voucher for parents in the CalWORKs welfare-to-work program, and also to parents of children under 2-years-old who are enrolled CalWORKs child care program. The supplement would ensure that struggling families have supplies of diapers needed to keep their children clean, dry, and healthy. Currently, no state or federal assistance programs provide diapers, a basic need of all babies. (more…)

NDBN Awards $100,000 to Member Diaper Banks

For the second consecutive year, the National Diaper Bank Network (NDBN) is awarding $100,000 in competitive grants to community-based diaper bank programs in the U.S.

Twenty-nine organizations operating in 21 states have been named recipients of NDBN’s 2016 Funds for Change grants, the only initiative of its kind dedicated to supporting the diaper bank community. The $100,000 awards include four $10,000 grants and 25 grants of up to $2,500 each. (more…)

“Behind the Story: Diaper Banks” Airs in Texas

NDBN Executive Director Joanne Goldblum was a guest on the KWBU radio program “Behind the Story: Diaper Banks” with host Carlos Morales, that aired today in Waco, Texas.

The episode begins with the founder of the newly established Waco Diaper Bank, Ellen Filgo, discussing her inspiration for starting the local organization. She also explains diaper need and its impact on families living in poverty.
